Violation Points
Demerits are charged on your driving record for moving violations and accidents. How they are charged varies from state to state. For instance, in some states, a single violation can result in multiple points.
For example, you can get additional points for going 30 miles over the speed limit or multiple points because of related violations such as running a stop sign and hitting a pedestrian. Insurance companies also rate drivers differently based on the number of points.
